And in both cases, the nervous system is left in a state of chronic, low-grade dysregulation.

What Can Be Done

I'm not going to tell you to delete your apps. That's not realistic, and it's not the point. The point is awareness.

Here's what I've found helpful—not as a prescription, but as a practice:

Before you open an app, pause. Ask yourself: "What am I feeling right now?" Often, the urge to scroll is an attempt to escape a feeling—boredom, anxiety, restlessness. Naming it is the first step.

2. Protect one deep block.
Set aside one period each day—even just 20 minutes—to do one thing. No switching. No tabs. No phone in the room. Just one task, one book, one conversation. Let your brain remember what sustained attention feels like.

3. Practice boredom.
Boredom tolerance is a skill, and most of us have trained it out of ourselves. Sit in silence for five minutes. Take a walk without headphones. Let your mind wander without feeding it. This is how the nervous system relearns how to settle.

4. Breathe before you scroll.
If you're going to consume, do it from a regulated state. One slow breath in. One longer breath out. Then open the app. You'll be surprised how different it feels.

5. Protect the hours before sleep.
The glymphatic system—your brain's cleaning crew—only works during deep sleep. Fragmented attention before bed keeps the nervous system activated. Dim the lights. Put the phone away. Give your brain a chance to flush the mental clutter accumulated from the day's activity.
